À ESPERA (II)

Maria Angélica Monnerat Alves

Sou advogado.

Raramente me permito certos sentimentalismos.

Pedi a conta, meio constrangido (o garçom me olhava de lado...).
Paguei e fui embora.

Eu a teria visto! Estava de frente para a porta! Nenhuma mulher madura, alta, de cabelos curtos, vestido e olhos azuis havia entrado!

O que teria havido? Algum acidente? (me lembrei de Cary Grant, no Empire State, aguardando a namorada, "Tarde demais para esquecer"...). Os tempos eram outros, felizmente! Entrei em casa e liguei. Ninguém atendeu. Insisti. Nada. Desisti.

Quedei-me, pensativo e pasmo.

(seria Ela a autora?)

Sôfrego, continuo a beber aquelas palavras, reconhecendo-me, aos poucos, ali, incontestavelmente!

Quanto medo! Não podia acreditar! As lágrimas me turvaram a visão, o coração disparou... meu Deus!!

Do sonho roubado!

Calma! Pra tudo se dá um jeito! No alto desta página, existe uma palavra: about.

WAITING

I’m a lawyer. Widower. Sixty-five.

I consider myself a practical person and maybe by a professional deformity, skeptical.

I rarely allow myself some sentimental moments.

A passage in my life, however, moves me and amazes me until today.

Three years ago, I called a client’s house. The person who answered the phone, a woman, told me that it was a mistaken call. I thank her and was about to hang up when, inexplicably, decided to wait for her to do so. But she didn’t. Then I caught ourselves laughing at that unusual situation! And we started to talk about trivial things… and we became friends.

For months we spoke, more and more frequently. For me, it was a pleasure to hear her voice and share her feelings. We had so much in common! I started to find myself anxious to talk to her… I re-scheduled so many meetings just so I wouldn’t miss that special moment!

Once, I was obliged, by a law suit, to go to São Paulo for two weeks. Unexpected problems appeared and I took a longer time that I had planned. As I came back to Rio, I called her immediately. I had the feeling that she was happy, but, at the same time, hurt with my disappearance. So I thought that I should invite her, once again, to have some tea. We could, finally, meet each other and calmly talk.

For my surprise, she accepted it at once.

We scheduled then for our meeting to take place in the Colombo Bakery and described the clothes that we would be wearing. (I remember until today, of the turquoise blue dress, ”to match her eyes”, that she would be wearing)

I arrived early. I wanted to be able to choose a good table, where we wouldn’t be disturbed. I sat and waited for her. I ordered a glass of water to help relax and started to exercise my imagination... how would she look like? Would she be really sixty? Was she really a widow?

We had scheduled our date for five o’clock. ( A British tea, she said) But at half past five, she hadn’t arrived yet. As I know how women are, I didn’t worry…

At six, I was in panic…

“A cup of coffee, please. I’m waiting for a friend that should arrive any minute now. No, I don’t want to eat nothing for now, thanks”.

At half past six, I was sure that she wasn’t going to show up.

I asked for the check, kind of embarrassed (the waiter looked at me in a strange way…)

I paid and left.

I walked a lot so that the released endorphins helped to think. I couldn’t understand why she did that... We got along so well! She happily accepted my invitation!

Suddenly, the suspicion: would she have misunderstood the address? The day?

The time? It can happen...

Or would she have been disappointed when she saw me?

But how? I would have seen her! I was facing the door!

No tall, short haired, mature woman with blue eyes and blue dress had come in!

What would have happened? Some accident? (I remembered of Cary Grant, at the Empire State Building, waiting for his girlfriend, in “An affair to remember”…)

The times had changed, happily! I got home and called her. Nobody answered.

I insisted.

Nothing.

I gave up.

The Next day, before I went to the office, I called again. A taped recording informed me that the dialed number had been deactivated. I stopped, astonished.

What could have happened?

Until today, after so much time, I haven’t figured it out.

Sometimes, I catch myself, hoping to listen to those blues eyes again when I pick up the phone…

Waiting II (another ending) or … LA VIE EN ROSE

The inexplicable disappearing, long time ago, of a women that I had fallen in love with, turned my life into a huge void.

I decided to react and launch myself in new challenges, handling a computer was one of them. And exactly trough this new experience, everything changed!

I’ll explain:

On a sleepless night, in those moments that used to bring me down, I opened, by chance, a web page, my teenager daughter’s gadget, something called Fotolog. The regard of a beautiful clock reminded me of the one in my old parent’s house. I was in-charged of winding up the clock every month… and with pride I accomplished my task!

Sensing a text under the picture, I’ve put myself to read it, hoping to sleepy… (Despite my preference for the cozy feeling of a book in my hands, I give it a try: the title, Waiting, appealed to me).

The eyes go trough those lines and the emotion fill me up: it was a love story, very similar to the one that I had lived and emotionally crushed me!... told be a woman! (would she be the author?)

Voracious, I keep drinking those words, recognizing myself there, bit by bit, incontestably!

HOW? So she went to the restaurant, as we have scheduled it?

We knew each other only trough phone and, in that day it was supposed to happen our first date…to which she never came, disappearing afterwards…)

She saw me, she fancied me, but didn’t came in? Why?

Vertigo!

She described herself in a different way in order to preserve herself?

(Was it really her?...  there wasn’t any doubt about it)

“THE SIMPLE FACT OF FEELING DESIRED WAS ENOUGH”

So much fear! I couldn’t believe it! The tears blinded me, my heart beat fast… my God! (Until today I’m not able to clearly define my feelings at that moment!)

From then on meeting her again was my constant thought!

Tell about the chaos that her attitude had generated in my life! The endless love that I still feel for her! The dream that had been stolen!

But, how? Desperate, I send and e-mail to a friend that, pc expert, advises me:

Relax! Everything can be fixed! At the top of this page there’s a word: about. Click it and see if by any chance the fotologger’s e-mail is available. If it is, everything gets easier!

I return to the web page, I click, and there it is: it’s a woman. Would it be her?...

My heart beats like a hammer! Assertive, I send a message, telling my whole story, a long text. Send! I feel a mix of relief and anxiety: would she answer it?

…would she be HER?

The unlikely happens, half an hour later: I’ve got mail!

Shaky, I open it: Kindly, she tells me that the woman I was looking for is her cousin (!!!)… and more: as she thinks that this love story deserves another ending, she would give me her new phone number!

The weep, so long kept, finally, is released!

And holding tight the piece of paper (where I wrote the magical number) in my hands, I fall asleep in peace!

The end to the long waiting!

The next day, I took the courage to call her.

She said to me that her cousin had told her, early in the morning, what had happened and that she was very touched with that unexpected flashback.

When I asked her why she did it, she preferred to remain in silence.

So I suggested that we went to dinner in the same restaurant, to calmly talk and, who knows? Take our story from where it had been interrupted. She said yes. I bought her some azaleas, her favorite flower.

I arrived earlier… (pure anxiety!)

Soon after, I saw a seductive mature woman approaching!

…It was her!

She gave a shy smile and blushed (I love women that blush…)

She sat by my side and we stared, in silence, for long and embarrassing minutes... a tear insisted on showing up, but I took hold of myself (boys don’t cry! It reminded me of my mother…)

So, we had a frank, adult conversation, in which everything was cleared up. The fear of establishing a new relationship had stopped her. A strict raising and nun boarding school, thought her to remain a widow forever!

When, at last, we were the only ones left in the restaurant, we went out.

We took a walk on the beach then. The soft breeze of summer’s beginning, the moonlight, the sound of the waves, everything made this a special moment.

As we said good-bye, we were sure that, this time, the fear of loving wouldn’t be on the way of a promising life together.

We kept seeing each other daily and it’s always a great pleasure to live with her.

Next month is her birthday.

I’ve already got her gift:

Two flight-tickets to Paris, one way only!

…the return, who knows when?

I’m glad that my love story had a happy ending!
